Imagine having nothing but the clothes on your back, no soap, no clean underwear, no way to stay healthy — and all vulnerable to exploitation. For displaced families and refugees, this is a daily reality.
🇬🇧 Why this matters to the UK and globally
- In the UK alone, 122,000 people live in modern slavery at any one time > 1.8 per 1,000 people.
- In 2022, over 16,000 potential victims were referred through the National Referral Mechanism, the highest number on record.
- Many refugees arriving at European borders received emergency hygiene kits: UNHCR distributed 150,000 hygiene kits and 80,000 menstrual items in border zones in recent crises.
These are not just numbers. These are mothers, daughters, sons, who, in their most vulnerable moments, face the risk of being coerced, trafficked, or abused because they lack the most basic protection.
🧼 How hygiene kits help prevent trafficking
When someone has access to clean water, soap, underwear, menstrual supplies, and essential toiletries:
- It preserves health and dignity
- It builds resilience against coercion
- It reduces opportunities for exploitation by weakening traffickers’ ability to exploit desperation
Every kit is a shield.

❤️ Real impact, real stories
“We walked for days. I had nothing. When they gave me a kit — soap, underwear — I felt human again.”
That dignity can save someone from becoming a victim.
Let’s unite across the UK to say: “You are not alone. You are protected. You deserve dignity.”
