“I thought someone else would report it.”
Those six words are often heard after tragedies.
Someone else will notice.
Someone else will call.
Someone else will step in.
But what if everyone thinks someone else is going to act?
Human trafficking survives in silence.
Freedom often begins when one person decides not to look away.

You Don’t Need to Be an Expert to Save a Life
As football fans gather to celebrate the World Cup, millions of people will travel through airports, hotels, train stations, restaurants, fan zones, and stadiums.
Most people are exactly where they want to be.
Some are not.
The challenge is that trafficking victims rarely wave for help.
Many appear frightened.
Some appear controlled.
Others may not even realise they are victims.
Trauma, fear, manipulation, threats, and debt can make asking for help feel impossible.
That is why awareness matters.

James’ Story
The following story is a composite based on the experiences of trafficking survivors and frontline responders.
James was waiting for his train after a match when he noticed something unusual.
A young woman stood beside an older man.
Every time someone spoke to her, he answered.
She avoided eye contact.
She looked exhausted.
When she reached for her bag, he pulled it away and held onto it himself.
Maybe they were family.
Maybe they weren’t.
James wasn’t sure.
But something didn’t feel right.
Instead of confronting the man, he quietly alerted transport security and provided a description of what he had seen.
Security staff intervened safely.
That one conversation triggered a safeguarding response.
James never discovered what happened afterwards.
But he will always know this:
He chose not to ignore his instincts.

Signs That Something Might Be Wrong
No single sign proves trafficking.
However, several together may indicate someone needs help.
Look for people who:
🚩 Appear frightened, anxious, withdrawn, or submissive.
🚩 Allow another person to speak for them.
🚩 Have no access to their own identification, phone, or money.
🚩 Seem unsure of where they are or where they are going.
🚩 Are being closely monitored or controlled.
🚩 Show signs of exhaustion, malnutrition, or poor living conditions.
🚩 Avoid eye contact or appear coached in their responses.
🚩 Are moved frequently between locations.
Trust your instincts.
⸻
What NOT To Do
This may be the most important part of all.
❌ Do not confront suspected traffickers.
❌ Do not attempt a rescue yourself.
❌ Do not place yourself or the victim in danger.
❌ Do not publicly accuse someone.
Traffickers can be dangerous.
Direct intervention can increase risk for everyone involved.
⸻
What TO Do Instead
✅ Observe carefully.
✅ Remember descriptions, locations, and times.
✅ Contact venue security, police, or the relevant trafficking hotline.
✅ Share factual information only.
✅ Allow trained professionals to respond.
Your job is not to investigate.
Your job is to report concerns safely.
⸻
Why Small Actions Matter
Most trafficking victims are identified because someone noticed something unusual.
A receptionist.
A cleaner.
A taxi driver.
A nurse.
A flight attendant.
A teacher.
A football fan.
Ordinary people change lives every day.

Rahab’s Daughters Believes Communities Are the First Line of Defence
Law enforcement cannot fight trafficking alone.
Governments cannot fight trafficking alone.
Charities cannot fight trafficking alone.
Communities matter.
Businesses matter.
Fans matter.
You matter.
Every informed citizen makes exploitation harder.
Every trained employee closes another door to traffickers.
Every report creates another opportunity for freedom.
⸻
A Final Reflection
Football fans are passionate people.
We wear our colours proudly.
We stand together.
We defend our teams.
What if we brought that same passion to defending vulnerable people?
What if our greatest contribution to this World Cup wasn’t just cheering from the stands…
But protecting the person standing beside us?
